DP Mid Semester Degree Project

So my question for my degree project is "How can environmental and spacial design educate and persuade skiers and snowboarders at ski resorts and other areas such as ski shops about sustainable practices that relates to and concern their winter sport?

I have been struggling with moving at a consistent pace during this project but I feel that I sometimes have to go through a rut to realize what I need to do to get out of it and also come to a better solution. I came to the idea of naming my organization S.O.S. based off of the distress call Save Our Souls used by military and other first aid groups. I changed it to Save Our Snow as if the snow and the environment itself is calling out to the skiers and snowboarders for help. I now know that community is a huge key for my audience and I want to approach them in a way that engages the whole community and not just on an individual level.

I created the SOS letters in 3D form and filled them with ice and snow so they would melt and convey the message of climate change and the fact that the snow is melting and the issue is a serious topic to be concerned about. I want to continue pushing the instillation idea of the 3D letters but Im looking more now at the system and an identity of the brand. I plan on creating these posters that are informational and also persuasive. They need to be bold, attractive and also engage my audience to want to go to SOS.com to learn more about what they can do and learn about the issue of climate change and how serious it really is. The use of projecting at slopes during night skiing will be utilized for people to engage in a fun and large scale experience. The look and feel of the brand will be recognized by the color blue and also the snowflake icons that carry a theme and message within themselves. The use of viral videos, stickers, posters, give aways and other promotional items could also be great tools for my organization to spread, educate and get people excited about this change in being more responsible to maintain the sports that winter gives us.

This poster with the chart for all the wheel color choices you have is very practical for the viewer to see the wide amount of options when picking out the right color combination.

Poetic

The scion set up of with their boom box graphics i found to be poetic by really giving me a feeling of what they brand and company are all about. They created a environment that really stood out from the rest.

Persuasive

They also had a clever and interesting persuasive poster on the back of their giant boom box that said "become one of us, by becoming none of us" Really encouraging you to be a part of a very diverse community where being different and unique, makes you part of what scion is all about with the ability to customize your car to your style.

DP: My Ideal Career

I would have to say I would love to one day see myself sitting in an office as the creative director looking out my window overlooking the snowy mountains in colorado. But I know that is jumping a head of my self just a little bit.

I really want to bounce around across the US working with all kinds of agencies, firms and corporations until I really find what suits me. Not just the job it self but the city in which im surrounded in. I'm looking forward to see where my BFA will take me and the experiences I will have living outside of Kansas City. I see my self one day coming back to KC but I want to explore outside and create a large body of work for a lot of companies and clients. I see my self working one day for burton snowboards or oakley as an in-house designer and other companies that peak my interest. I want to be able to one day snowboard down the mountain on a board that I designed for a respectful and well known company.

But most of all I want to enjoy my life and love my job. I want to constantly be challenged and really learn as much as I can.

The wheel navigation of my portfolio site gives the viewer a different but not to complexed way to look at my work. A nice transition with the help of tweenlight happens when you click on the nav to the left and explore that way or simply by clicking the corners of the project above or below. The farther you jump the faster the wheel spins and the nearest you jump the slower it turns. With in each project you can go in depth with more views and you are given more information as a caption or a description with a rollover. Contact page which could be a image of my business card and on rollover maybe reveal the back.

My portfolio and all my pages would be on a grid like this and once clicked on the corresponding link as shown below, it would take you to the desired page and the navigation would stay at the top. This is the whole sliding idea but instead of just left and right panning you could also go diagonally along with up and down as well.

would be the same concept as #1 but there is no grid this time but more like an arrangement of panels.

These would be in clusters with rollover previews and then you click on one, it would pan and zoom to a full screen image/ images of the work, along with descriptions and also a navigation bar.

The navigation would be a smaller view of the larger wheel that would allow you to navigate and also see where you currently are on the wheel. Different sorting methods would be on an inner wheel along with a contact button.

the idea that files have started to become more transparent and more like tangible objects that we organize and also through a way is an interesting thought. Also when we delete things now or put them in the trash, we still have the files somewhere on our hard disk that we can get recovered which the common person would not know how to do.

The computer started to become more than just a tool like a calculator, or image manipulator, it became a filter for all culture, which all kinds of uses are ready at hand such as watching movies on, playing games, reading books, how we communicate or network and the list continues.

The computer is code that carries cultural messages in a variety of media.

Even though we do countless things on the computer every day, we operate and use the computer in the same way by using the screen with the aid of a mouse, a web browser, search engines, cut, paste, copy, delete and others are used to carry out our wants and needs out of a computer.

when we are looking at the computer we have the content and the form in which it lives and is presented on screen and how we interact with it and view it. We scroll down long sheets of pages much like ancient scrolls were viewed but we also have the ability to navigate much like a book doses from page to page.

Spactialization is the relation to looking at something linearly of nonlinearly. like the game myst, explores this thought by allowing you to navigate in a non linearly type of way with no sense of direction. Un like the old super mario games that directed you on a 2d flat environment that was very much linear.

So in terms of thinking about my website i want to make sure that the viewer can explore what they want in a non-linear path that allows them to look at what they want to look at. As long as i show them all of the information and lay it all out on the table so they can view what interests them rather than me telling them what to look at.

78-93: Cinema

The reason why people are favoring time-based audiovisual image sequences is because of the role cinematic elements have become more popular than silent print. Much like movies and books.

Cinematic elements offer many things such as zoom, pan, tilt, and track over a 3D space of object. The window in which we view this media is a view into another large world that really becomes believable. In a printed material the area stops at the borders where as there are no borders in a moving piece or animation. It can start to take on a world of its on.

We should look into using what new technology has to offer us that can deliver our message in an interesting cinematic way that can give the viewer a richer experience.

HCI: Representation Versus Control

Bolter and Grusin define medium as that which remediates. that all media works by remediating and transforming other media both in content and form.

the computer screen has become a virtual instrument panel that is interactive with an illusion that takes you to another place that becomes believable. Along with it being believable there are still graphic elements and text which are necessary to inform the viewer with content. There is a line where it has to be pleasing to the eye and at the same time rich with content so that the viewer's interest is kept and they don't feel overwhelmed with text and other content. So a balance is needed. There has to be standards as well that are a universal language but the strive to be original and creative are also things to strive for. We know that this form of language and technology is a new type of media that is relatively young compared to print and cinema and we know it will have a landmark in history much like they did. We do not know where this technology is going and where it will take us or when it will stabilize but we need to take advantage of the what the computer has to offer and continue to explore the limits and question what it can or could be developed to do. It is a new cultural metalanguage and as designers, we will be part of authoring the content and illustrating what it will look like. So how can my website do simply and complex functions and question new ways in which to explore media? I don't know but i hope i know can learn the code and the technology to pull it off.

94-103 The Screen and the User

The classical screen has been around for centuries with and used by painters and even to this day by hollywood's cinema. These screens are the bridges to another place and can make you believe you are looking into another world. I've never really stopped to think about why we call layouts landscape or portrait. It makes sense when they point out the simple origin from which it came from, when a painter would normally paint a landscape horizontal and a portrait is typically proceeded vertical.

The dynamic screen can simply be summed up as a screen with more dimension than just a flat image, but an image that changes over time much like frames in a movie or tv. With the screen serving as an illusion so we are drawn in to its detail so we forget about whats happening out side the frame, the screen needs to be perfect with as few imperfections as possible that would lead us to not focusing on the screen. When the screen on a computer is utilized with multiple windows, and is not focused on just one screen, the user is able to work in multitask. Right now even i have the reading in one window and my blog which im typing in another, and my email and homework in two other windows. This form is more practical and can be utilized to get things done in a more timely and effective manner. Another way to view and another type of screen is live view, a current view of what is actually happening, like the invention of radar and being able to see where your enemies current position is. An example in the modern day of a live view could maybe be something like talking to someone and seeing them live on skype through the use of a web camera. Or maybe a live view of snow creek to see live footage or the location to see how and what the conditions are, how crowded it maybe could help you decide if it is worth the trip so when you get out there, you don't find your self surprised of disappointed, you are informed with the knowledge and advantage of live view. I never really thought about it too much but i think its interesting how most of the things we use today like the computer and the things we are able to do on it, were originally designed for the use of the military and the public has taken that provided technology that was created for a completely different use and turned it into things that do a verity of different things that address the wants and needs for the people in the united states and all around the world. I hope that my site can remain current and serve as a live representation of my work and shows currently who i am as a graphic designer. With that in mind the use of blogs and continuing to keep a current blog, i think is a great way to keep a current look into your daily work.

103-115 The Screen and the Body

The relation between the physical space of your body and the virtual space of an image on a screen plays on what is real and what is not and the illusion can be reached successfully if you can fool the senses of the body much like in virtual reality, the screens edges disappear and you see your self surrounded by what the screen as created. The viewer has to become still and seated as if they are imprisoned and you can always leave them with something more to look at that makes them want to engage, invest in, and stay. Maybe in my site, the use of having thumbnails in the nav shows them a crop and taste of what is inside that project and the top and bottom of the screen would provide a tease and a way of saying that im right here and all you have to do to see me is click right here and since my site is in a form of a wheel, you never really start and end, it just continues to go around and around and around.

Representation versus Simulation

In representation the viewer is bound to the screen and in simulation the human world and virtual world are the same so it appears to be continuous and believable. It blends the two worlds into one and the viewer is able to move around in physical space. The world we live in is consumed by screens and re interact with them on a daily basis. The goal of making the screen more transparent and bigger and better with more HD is our goal to progress the experience and make it more and more attractive. I wonder were we will be with screens in the future and how we will interact with them. Virtual reality, holograms, projections supply endless possibilities in which media, programs and even entertainment can be utilized. Im excited to see how my website or my work will be viewed or how it will be viewed in 10-20 years. Will you be able to touch it, smell it, hold it, im not sure what it will be but im open for change and the advancement of technology and what it can offer to me as a graphic designer.

It has been tough trying to come up with a theme and ideas that should lead to the jewel piece in my portfolio and that is also a push into the direction in which I want to further pursue graphic design as I leave KCAI and start my career. I want to change and advocate things but I am having a hard time putting my finger on exactly what I want to do. I really am open to a variety of things,but I want to focus on the integration and relationship that graphic design has with photography.

I feel that photography and design go together seamlessly as text and image but most of the photography these days is pre-shot and not always taken into consideration like stock photography and then later the design is worked in and around to fit that photograph. I want to work with design in the physical world and in different environments and use design and typography in a physical and tactile sense to create well designed pieces that could be applied to many things such as identities and advertisements rather than just overlaying text and art work onto an image. I have always felt that you can get a much better result when you go out and take the time to actually create something to make a piece work rather than trying to photoshop or manipulate a photo to make it work.

So I want to take my design knowledge and apply it to what I know about photography and join them to create messages, identities and solve other design problems and really take advantage and utilize what these two fine arts have to offer when they are used together in the right way or this new way. I don’t know who this will help or where this could go but I do know I want it to live out in the world rather than solely on screen. I can also see this direction forming into a way to show off graphic design's beauty in the world with the use of installations which really starts to make design more of a physical personal experience rather than just something you see online or printed on a poster. The ability to take and create your own perspective on how you view the design and how you interpret it can really open new ideas to creativity.

I know I am majoring in graphic design and that I am not going to be a professional photographer but I think the gap between the two should become smaller and more collaborative. I would like to think I could one day design work and create something in the environment and shoot it the way I have originally envisioned it to begin with so the end result is much more to my liking rather than just settling to make it work based on what I am given from professional photographers. I could easily see my work being shot by professional photographers after my initial and completed photographed design piece or I think working directly with a photographer on site and creating a piece would also be beneficial.

I also think my direction could solely live outside and in the environment for people to interact with, come in contact with, be affected by it and not even need the use of photography at all. The photography would be used to capture and give across the message in my mind and through that way I would have more control. Also whatever I make has to be documented by photography and maybe that is where the photography and the graphic design ends and really the message or the piece lives on by itself and it solely interacts with itself rather than with printed imagery. I would see this to be a way to have the design break out of being frozen in time and have a life of its own and maybe have motion to it or even an actual life span of existence. I want people to see design in a new way that will get their attention, inspire, reach them on a personal level, but overall become an enjoyable and hopefully meaningful experience.

Texting is becoming one of the most popular ways to communicate. It's fast, it's easy and it's fun. Unfortunately people are not just talking on their phones, they are texting as they drive. When people text and drive they are taking their eyes off whats really important, the road, other drivers, street signs, traffic lights, pedestrians, everything. More than 1/3 of ages 24 and under, are texting on the road. So my goal is to get people to recognize how dangerous texting and driving is and advocate for a change in driving habits.

The name is the word amaze backwards. And the word amaze refrences what a magican gets out of the time and effort they put it. They are able to amaze people. The illusion triangle could act as a symbol or an icon for Ezama. They logo type is a very sharp all cap type the shows the organizations passion, boldness and gives them a sense of credibility. They triangle also hints to the letter "A" which hints at the secret behind the word Ezama, Amaze.

The colors to be used will be black, white, shades of grey, a highlight of red and subtle use of gradients.

Visual Advocay: Texting While Driving Surveyfiling

I had a lot of success with this survey and for the most part people liked filling it out. People were open to talking about the issue and the project after they were done with the survey. I went to my old high school and set up a table with pens, my survey and also 300 Dum Dums to give out after they filled a survey out. I also walked around with a friend and handed them out one at time, at out side seating restaurants and other social gathering spots like stores and hair salons. Most places didn't have a problem with me doing it and were happy to help. I've received around 225 surveys.

MULTIMEDIA EXPERIENCE: Problem Solving

Need: a way to get noticed and connected to local and national skate teams so they can become sponsored.

Solution: Members of this site would be able to login, and search for local or even national openings for skate teams. They would then be able to gather information about the team and see what they are looking for in riders. They would also have their contact to where they could go and visit the team themselves in person or upload a video onto our site so they can send the skate team the link to the site so they can watch the video. So an organized way to go through the steps of getting sponsored with advice and suggestions.

Need: A way to find skaters that are close to their level so they can learn and progress as they push each other along.

Solution: Would be giving the users of the site to list their abilities and also what they would like to learn and improve on and then the site could find locals in your area that match what your looking for so you can then become, "friends" on line and talk about if you would want to meet up at a certain skate park so you could both work on things and try to learn what the other one knows. Also you might just develop a great friendship in the process.

Need: Find out more about local competition around the area and also about visiting more larger professional competitions and find out how to attend them.

Solution: Would to list local and national competition through a word of mouth and updated by the users daily. They could then read and learn about the competition, like where and when, how much to enter and also what kind of competition it is. They could then register and make their way to that competition and possibly do well in a competition that they never knew existed. Also for finding professional competitions and attending these events like the x-games, we would have bus trips set up for local areas if there were enough people interested in attending they could arrange a trip that would bring them to that event, where as they might never have the opportunity to make it out to one of these amazing performances by the best skaters in the world.

Ideas for Design Systems

Transportation: Travel Bus Company

This service would arrange and provide trips to colorado and other major ski resorts around the country and would be a bus that one could sleep on as it traveled and would be designed to take large groups over 21 probably so that alcohol could be a possibility if that was the case. The bus would also be the same bus that would take you back from where you departed from and would be seen as a company that was providing a service to people who do not want to drive themselves long distances and it would be a lot cheeper than flying. This bus service would not have to be just for ski resorts but could be used for other trips, but ski resorts is something that interests me and could be what this company specializes in.

Place: Shot gun and Rifle Range

This range could also be placed anywhere and it could be inside or out. Probably out but inside could be interesting. It would have the capability to shoot skeet with shot guns and targets for rifles, hand guns and even archery. The service to come to this location could almost be set up as a club and it would be organized and safe. The purchasing of accessories and also cleanings of weapons could be provided as a service.

Place: Indoor ski and snowboard park.

It is a location that can be installed anywhere in the country and makes extreme skiing and snowboarding available all year round. The enclosed environment will have the ability to keep a rather small area cold enough for snow but still large enough to hold a good amount of people and large enough to have the room for jumps and rails, possibly a half pipe. The size might be close but probably smaller than a football or baseball stadium. This area would attract many people if placed in the right location and it would have the potential to really become popular and convenient.

??Ideas/Preforming: Card tricks/ Magicians??

This could be a service for Magicians maybe so that they could get gigs to preform, teach magic and card tricks or something that deals with magic. Im not too sure about this idea but i kinda wanted something that dealt with card tricks because it is kind of i hobby of mine, but i don't really know where i could take or push the idea.

The online community will hopefully help reinforce the progression of the sport by providing a networking system to promote dialogue between skaters on both a local and global scale.

Revised Conference Paragraph

Typography has always been around us and we see it every day. The type we don't see every day is what interests us here at the "Light on Type" Conference and we would like to share these ideas and these creative methods with you. Over the weekend we will be shedding some light on new ways on how typography can be produced and also generated. Revised Artist Paragraph

Fred Eerdekens grew up in Belgium and has created and made some work that really stands out of the ordinary. Fred’s work consists of instillations that involve a strong beam of light, which shine through natural or built structures. He creates words and phrases by casting a shadow and letting the positive or negative space create the letter forms. The installations are pleasing to look at and many times have multiple meanings with them. His work can also at times be poetic but in the end he is always giving us something new to experience and and interact with. Fred's idea of a the meaning of the words in his work is affected by both the word its self and its surrounding. Fred believes that language is inside and outside all at once. In the end, Fred is looking at forming typography in a new way with the use of light and shasdows. Fred will be speaking and also hosting a demo and is willing to share the ways he came to his discoveries and his method use to create his work.

At this conference graphic designers well see some light shed on some new ways of looking at typography and how it can be generated. The use of the hand is a major part of this experience and moving away from the computer as the tool but using it in a way to just is a way to present the art work. While learning how to bring ordinary type to light, they will also be learning how to create an experience. The conference will contain several break out sessions and workshops that deal with making these experiences with various kinds of medium and then capturing that experiences digitally so it can last forever. The goal is to be able to look at creating type with a different perspective and creating unique and interesting work.

I really enjoyed the reading and i feel that these categories really depend on the content of what the type is physically saying. Just alone my experimental type with light is clearly inversion because the image i am taking with my camera is the actual type itself. With out the photograph, i would have no letters at all because each letter is created over time in about 2-3 seconds and the only way to capture and have that as a physical object is by flattening that time with still picture. That being said i really think i can apply what ive learned and start using separation, fusion and also fragmentation by coming up with content for my type to speak. For example i want to play with my photography and incorporating my new type ideas so i can get a more of a poetic approach and be able to create multiple meanings within the message.

Through this reading, i think it really describes how important the image is to graphic design and i really think graphic designers can become great photographers because only we can see what is in our mind and know how we want to relate that image to the text it self so they speak harmoniously. This is where i question the use of stock images or using a professional photographer because if the idea is great, the photograph and the type are simply components of the design that bring it together as a whole.

After trying to make letter forms out of moving figures like snowboarding or skiing, i realized it was not turning out they way i envisioned it and i was forced to turn to my back up plan which was pulled from a number or inspirations starting with Fred Eerdekens and his use of light and the hand element from Sagmeister, and a snowboard video on youtube called magic flashlights , i was inspired to make letter forms out of light and capture the motion on camera with a slow shutter speed. I used various materials which gave me a verity of outcomes.

I am wanting to experiment with typography by playing around in different environments that will give the viewer and experience. Exploring 3 dimensional objects in space and seeing how they can create letter forms and also how things can possibly interact with them such as people or sun light by casting shadows.

Questions:

How can my type tell and or create a story for the viewer?

Can there be a way to represent the type through photographs and stop animation of video and further tell a story?

How can i push the legibility of the text but still keep the viewer interested?

I really found out through out my research that typography can really be experimental and open a lot of doors. I am really interested in when the use of typography can create a meaning, a feeling, tell a story, make you laugh, make you think and over just give you an experience. I feel like the trend is to create something new big and fresh, almost maybe trying too hard to impress or sell the client. I also think that as designer we tend to create everything on our macbooks and hit print. We need to step outside and bring our design thoughts with us.
As ive been searching for images online for this class and also just for inspiration, I am most drawn to the ones that give me an experience and they are most of the time not on paper but in the environment. The artist such as Stephan Sagmeister, Fred Eerdekens, and the guys who created the type perspective parking garage, sketch out their ideas on paper or start designing on their macbooks im sure but they idea only became an experience when it stood by its self in its environment. I really think why typography in the environment works so well is because the alphabet has rules and restrictions but our imagination does not. So when these two combine they can create something great or something horrible but the thing is that we learn and take away a piece of knowledge every time we create work. I really feel that this type of work is important not only for designers so we can grow our creative minds but to inspire our clients and viewers. I know my creative mind could not live inside the box because it would never fit inside.

Wow so i think after reading this we as designers will look at everything a little differently and i also think it explains how others such as my friends and family sometimes only see art or graphic design instead of actually perceiving it the way i do. I agree that we are always learning and taking in the things we want to, based on our interests, and that this is why we as artist our so diverse and the range of our work and style is all because of our knowledge and how we have been raised. As a designer in the field or just as an artist in general, when we focus on one thing rather than something else much like a camera, that one thing becomes an exaggeration, it is our work, our art, our mind, its everything put into a selective perception.

I also think that this reading touched on perspective quite nicely and how thinking about anything and how and who created it, and under what circumstances, will you only then get the full meaning of the the artists work and how they had meant it to be seen. I really think we can learn from the queen elizabeth and world model perspective example by applying that comparison and taking the time and perspective to analyze something so we can truly understand it, learn from it and really apply it towards something great. "The more we are aware of the role of exaggerations in perception, the more meaningful our perceptions will be come." Its hard to be able to analyze everything around us all the time but i think when we do its when we can really learn something great, and as designers, when we take our knowledge that we've learned and successfully organize and design it to present it for future clients and people, that will be a moment of when art is helping out the world. I also know think the Vignelli's strict modernism view is just his point of view, and it works but it is not the only way to make design. But with McCoy's way of taking everything you learn and stepping back and breaking it down so you can further excel i new ways is the solution of advancing and recreating graphic design. This article really offered a lot to think about for me and really gives me a different perspective of looking at things.

I was drawn the most to the modernism essays: Massimo Vignelli: Long Live Modernism! and Kathy McCoy: Rethinking Modernism, Revising Functionalism. I really enjoyed Massimos essay and how it gave an insight to where and how graphic design will advance in the future by change and how as graphic designer will create smart ways that are effective and creative that will sort out the chaos in the world and make it easy to access and find information through design.

Although i did enjoy how Mccoy is looking at modernism in a new perspective now that she has gone through it once and functionalism and now approaching modernism in her own way. I feel that Massimo is a little hardcore about strict modernism and i feel i am between them cause the both influence me but i still have my own perspective on things.

I want to talk about how they both see modernism and also how i see it from my perspective and also where they are going with it moving forward and how i can see it affecting the way i think about graphic design.

When thinking about the final step in this postcard assignment i thought about the image Kaufman sent me with the image of negatives overlaid on top of my image. From there i came to the conclusion the my theme would be memory and i originally thought of the negatives being burned away by the advancement of technology in digital electronic film. Slowly erasing history and the way pictures are taken by creating a fast, instant, memory system that not only let your review the image right away before processing the image, you are able to view the image on the camera and then transfer it to on to you computer where you can edit and store your image permanently and easily make as many prints as you desire. The memory card is also small and takes up little space but can hold tons of images. Instead of taking a maximum of 24 images on film you are capable of taking megabytes to gigabytes (100-1000) images with out ever having to replace the film or in this case change out the memory card. Also once you buy one memory card you can reuse it over and over forever. Sense you have the option to take so many photos, you dont have to worry about your settings always being correct at first sense you can use trial and error to get the settings right and delete the ones that fail right away. It also allows you to take a lot more photos which increases your chance of getting that perfect shot since your not restrained to only taking 24 images and thats it. You don't have to worry about wasting film because its digital you can literally take as many pictures as you want and try to capture anything and everything in your life that appeals to you.

In my final piece i wanted to show the opposite side of real film and negatives by showing the back of the digital SLR with the memory card door open and having images of a lot of things in life the one may take on their camera. The method of showing the images flowing into the camera shows the direct relation to how the images are processed and how instant the film is. So my imagery along with my text shows images varying from landscapes and clouds to family and events like the 4th of july. One is able to capture and document their whole life and every detail they wish to share. Also my imagery is showing the advancement in technology of the camera not only on how the film is processed but also the user of professional cameras are getting easier to use and are becoming more and more popular to take high quality images with a high quality and professional camera.

I would say that the Red Bull Wiiings Team is a direction that is similar to what i want to do because they just walk up to people on the street and they give out red bull just to promote the drink.

The freebord team would find snowboarders where ever they are and promote and demonstrate the sport.

Super Size Me has a kind of feel that im looking for, as far as the video quality would be a simple hand held video camera but the content of what it is recording overrides the quality of the video.

The purpose of this show is to promote freebording in places where snowboarders live such as Colorado, Utah, California, Wyoming, etc. It is to let snowboarders know that there is hope after the last chair lift closes on the slopes, you are able to still get the snowboard sensation during the off season and its free. Not the board it self but the ability to ride where ever you want, no lift tickets, no ski patrol, pure freedom and up to you imagination to where you ride and how you ride.

The show would be on once a week from April-November at 8pm-9pm. And each week the freebord team would consist of professional freeborders and the founder of freebording to go around and demonstrate, promote, hand out stickers, posters, and the actual product it self to get the word about what it is and how it is the start of a new movement and concept for riding. The show would have clips of new hills to ride because not only would the team be finding snowboarders and promoting the product, they would be exploring new terrain and having fun finding new and exciting hills. When they find these snowboarders in the off season, they would catch their reaction to this fairly new and unheard of product and getting them into becoming part of the awareness and movement of freebording.

The channel would be on spike tv or mtv appealing to a young crowd and the shows host would be Bayard Winthrop the ceo and founder of freebord.

Through this project i have learned how to better design for the web after knowing about how programers have to go about translating that design into the web. I feel that my design from the sketches helped me get started but the true design came into play when i started sketching in flash with animations and then from there i figured out how to write my action script and learned how to organize and name my object and movie clips by using instance names and i discovered the more you practice this, the easier it comes.

I really wanted to keep this layout and design simple with white space but still come across graphically interesting and appealing to where the viewer would stop and take time to interact with my site.

In this project I learned a lot about rhetoric and how to use it in my posters to grab my demographic, Japanese Americans. In these 2 posters I really wanted to focus on telling my demographic that their votes are important, should be taken seriously and for them to realize how powerful as a group they can be with their votes. In the wave i wanted to show the great wave of kanagawa originally carved by Hokusai as a parody and relate it to voting by replacing the white caps and light blue tones with voting ballets. This shows the wave made out of votes and it shows that their votes are as powerful as this very wave in this wood cut. Also i pulled colors from the original art works color palette and referenced the stamp/signature that you would commonly see in japanese art work. When saying "gather", i wanted a short and simple phrase that captured the imagery of the wave and the idea of voting. So to all the Japanese Americans out there, come and "gather" together as a culture and cast your votes and make a difference.

In the Go poster i was really trying to focus on the metaphor trope and how the black and white stones stood for a choice in voting. The choice of voting is not always easy and that is also true in the game of Go and how every move is taken into consideration and strategized. Much like the election and campaigning, strategizing will surely determine the outcome of an election. With the text "think about it" I wanted the viewer to read it and think that their vote is worth thinking about and how it is serious much like the game of go. They are both present in history for voting has been around and developing for generations and the game of go has known as the oldest board game and is still being written about today as far as to how it relates to war and the strategizes behind the game.

I met with Greg K., Grant, and Chris and had a great crit. We all got great feedback and I think it would be great to do this again in the future if possible. I got some good ideas about my wave poster and how i could add some tonal ballets that were a lighter blue to give the wave some more depth. Also that my type of the gather could be a little smaller and going back and re-writing my japanese characters. Also on my go poster, turning my type to a lighter color and making the new vote characters and text smaller. But overall everyone enjoyed my images and concepts. I have learned and gained a better understanding and perspective of how storyboarding, animations, and narratives are told and how to go about telling a narrative through a series of frames. In this project I have also learned how to ride a freebord and how to assemble one frontwards and backwards. Also through my process and viewing my classmates work I know that narratives can be told many ways depending on the narrator. In the beginning I enjoyed experimenting with different methods of depicting my two actions through drawing, collageing, thinking outside the box with metaphors and photography which was my choice of medium in the end. After choosing photography, I learned that editing is key into creating a good narrative. Changing the pace in a narrative by increasing and decreasing frames between scenes, transitioning between actions and actions and scenes to scenes can make the viewer or audience become engaged and in your narrative, especially when they are forced to use their imagination when I story doesn’t tell you everything.

Digital Cameras:

The 6.3 megapixel Canon Rebel was a turning point for canon digital cameras in 2003 for it was their first professional camera that was under $1000. They took away certain features from the famous EOS-10 and instead of using magnesium alloy they used plastic to cut down on cost.

Audience:

My new audience is still going to consist of people who like photography but also have knowledge about digital cameras, and want to know more about how they got started and where they are going. Digital is all around us know, especially with the web so we all are in direct contact to digital photography every day so, everyone has some kind of connection to them. Artist would be a big group of my audience sense they are using them every day to document their work and also students who are majoring in photography would have interest in this exhibit. Audience:

My target audience would be anyone who is interested in photography's history or people who love photography and want to know a little more about the past of cameras and how far photography has come. Of course my audience would be photographers as well, especially ones who still shoot real film. The few photographers who prefer real film over digital and also people who like to do things old fashioned possibly and older crowd would enjoy this. Cameras take photographs and photographs produce memories and memories last forever. It is important to remember the past of photography, and this object is a symbol of photography that has become lost and not so popular anymore.

When working on this project and coming up with a way to relate 3 of my icons with another idea, was not as easy i it thought. After brainstorming and a lot of thinking i came up with 2 strong ideas that were simply the location of where you would find these ideas and conceptually relating them to war. The war idea sounded like the more interesting one to approach and is the direction i pursued. I had chess relating to the formation and arrangement of soldiers. For chess is formated in 2 lines of pieces and are strategically moved much like military formations. Just simply overlaying my icon onto the image made the figures approximately the same size of the icons. Then moving on to darts i thought about not only their shape but how they moved through the air much like a fighter jet. so i depicted a jet with the icon dropping from the nose and alluding to the fact of not only its shape but also the act of dropping bombs or even missiles. Finally foosball i took a picture of two men in uniform wrestling and overlaid it with foosball because in foosball you have two people fighting or "wrestling" over a ball. And i angled and blew up the icon to give a much dramatic effect. Then placing my text "wanna play?" was not the easiest task but i am happy with the outcome. I used a grey bar coming out of the top left corner and i have it fade in at the begging and out at the end but in between i have it stay at 100% as the images change behind it.

The info graphic was quite a challenging and fun process. I feel i have a better understanding of not only info graphs but i am more aware to how they are used and the time it takes for each one. In my info graphic I really wanted to show where and when the game was created/originated out of. Also i wanted to show the time it took from when it was first getting started to when and where in the United States formed the first official organization. My group of icons give you a nice visual that can take you down two paths, its origin and its history in the US. I reversed the icons so they were white on a dark background making them stand out and have more of a hierarchy. I originally had a pretty heavy handed map with too strong contrasting colors such as red, purple, black and blue. I then decided to look back at my original color palette with the dark navy and light grey and applied the best i could to my info graph which i think turned out for the better. I also wanted to keep the curve box look as a theme through out my article but it was brought to my attention that i was applying it a little heavy handed so i simply refined and toned it down where the outline stroke is thiner, making it easier for the eye to look at. I was having trouble with the connecting line, in rather they should be straight diagonals or show they follow a more horizontal and vertical grid and also what color. I really like the thin almost hair line yellow that guides your eye but at the same time, doesn't scream at you. I feel i have learned a lot from this project and even though it wasn't my favorite assignment, i think the skills and ideas that were brought to my attention as far as hierarchy in a spread and dealing with indesign was a plus but also how to convey a lot of information and display it in a manner that is not confusing, but attractive and easy to follow.

Great idea i think on combining classes like this for we do pull already things we have learned and are constantly learning from each class.
